Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ground sausage
- 10–12 shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 4 cups cooked rice
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1.5 cups mixed onions and bell peppers, chopped
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 tablespoon oregano
- 3 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt, to taste
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
1. Season the shrimp with seafood seasoning.
2. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook shrimp for 2–3 minutes per side until pink and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
3. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the same skillet.
4. Brown the ground beef and sausage over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon.
5. Add chopped onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic. Sauté for 5 minutes until softened.
6. Stir in oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using.
7. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well to combine.
8. Pour in chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5–7 minutes to thicken slightly.
9. Add cooked rice to the skillet and mix well. Simmer for another 5 minutes to absorb flavors.
10. Gently fold in the cooked shrimp. Stir to combine and serve hot.
Notes
Use Day-Old Rice: Leftover rice is ideal as it absorbs flavors better and prevents the dish from becoming too sticky.
Customize the Protein: Swap in chicken or turkey sausage for a lighter take.
Adjust the Spice Level: Add more cayenne or hot sauce for extra heat, or omit for a milder version.
Vegetarian Option: Use mushrooms and plant-based sausage instead of meat.
